What is a cubic meter:
A cubic meter (or stacked cubic meter) corresponds to a cube with sides of one meter (1 m), meaning a volume of one cubic meter (1 m³) of stacked wood, including the spaces between the logs. This unit is suitable when buying stacked firewood, for example, for self-collection. In southern Germany, „Ster“ is a more common term.
It’s important to note: A Ster and a cubic meter are ONLY the same if the log is 1 meter long.
What is a layered cubic meter:
A stacked cubic meter (1 m³) is equivalent to one cubic meter of stacked, short (burner-ready) firewood, e.g., with a length of 30 cm. In contrast to a cubic meter (squared logs), a stacked cubic meter is defined as firewood cut to stove-ready size (pieces) and, unlike a loose cubic meter, is neatly stacked. This unit of measurement is commonly used when firewood is transported or sold on a pallet.
